Steps for Registering a Trade Name

Businesses with an address in the city of Providence can file a certificate of Assumed Business Name, to register a trade name (aka business name) with the City Clerk.

Fees

The fees for filing a certificate of Assumed Business Name are as follows:

  • Registration – $10.00
  • Certified Copy of Certificate – $1.00

Registration Guidelines

The Assumed Business Name form should be downloaded and completed to include:

  • owner’s information
  • business location/address (street name, city, state, zip code)

The completed form should be notarized and returned to the City Clerk’s office. If needed, business owners can receive notary services at the City Clerk’s office:  Notary Fee – $5.00.

Business owners must present one of the following forms of valid identification when filing a trade name:

  • Passport
  • Driver’s License
  • State ID
  • Military ID
